TALK SHOW EPISODE NOTESOur HR HEROES HANGOUT™ series is dedicated to those who serve our societies each day, toiling in the bowels of the human capital infrastructure issues that fuel all organizations (hiring, retention, engagement, efficiency, compensation, legal compliance, policy and procedure continuous improvement, training and education, litigation mitigation, etc.); our HR HEROES! These are the unsung heroes that ensure that organizations achieve and sustain maximum human capital competitive advantage!
In this episode our topic is, "The Office Bully. Are They Bullying You?" In this show we discuss A Stone* of Solutions™ including: 1) Our HR Heroes aren't bullied. 2) For non-HR Hero staff, yes. 3) If you know who the "Office Bully" is... 4) then they are bullying you. 5) The job of HR is to be "on the side of" what is best for the organization. Revisit our show, “Whose ‘side’ is HR really on? Employer or Employee?” RADIO SHOW/AUDIO PODCAST Solutions...with Courtney Anderson! (SwCA) Episode 126 - Originally aired 6/17/2014 9:00 AM - HR HEROES HANGOUT series 6) The mission of HR is to protect the HR assets (humans) that will enable the organization to succeed (healthy fiscally, high retention, high engagement, high performing, High employee support and development, etc.). 7) Bullies by definition endanger the assets and the organization. "Definition of bully a : a blustering browbeating person; especially : one habitually cruel to others who are weaker" Bully. (n.d.). Retrieved November 26, 2014, from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bully 8) It is the responsibility of HR to protect the organization and the human assets from bullies. 9) HR HEROES DO NOT: ...tell managers with complaints regarding the office bully to proceed with caution by being patient ("there is no formal complaint so there is nothing that we can do at this time"); 10) ....tell the manager to "work it out" ("there are always personality conflicts"); 11) ...tell the manager, "But, they'll sue!" 12) HEROES are not scared of empty threats by bullies. Let them sue. The data is on the side of the employer. Fear of what a bully might do is what makes the bully flourish and spread misery and pain. HEROES use their talents and gifts to STOP Bullies and not ENABLE THEM. They STAND UP for themselves and for those whom they are responsible for protecting. 13) The manager must be supported and provided the immediate tools for progressive discipline to be implemented. Don't let bullies grow stronger and more powerful by failing the organization and the human assets. 14) HR HEROES must reach out to other professionals to help them learn how to be a hero and confront bullies and protect victims. BONUS: Bullies are a threat to your organization and to you. Use strategic human resources leadership and your strength of character to ensure your organization is clear on expectations of behavior. No bullying on your watch. Not here. No. In this show we discuss children kicking our seat on airplanes, broken windows theory, learned helplessness and more. Don't miss it! *A stone is unit of measure equaling 14 pounds (so we have 14 elements in our one stone of solutions!). Do You Want To Be A HR Hero? NOTE: I recently had a very impressive meeting with one of the leading HR compliance firms in the US (in business since 1984)! The firm operates HRdirect, G.Neil, PosterTracker, TrackSmart!, eFile4biz.com and other HR related solutions. You will recognize many of these HR solutions in our Show Sponsor Spotlight below. One of the most important and impressive aspects of this firm is that they reached out to our website and our show! We had submitted our site to be considered for their approval for advertising via an affiliate network and their executive took the time to compliment our community (that's you) and our content (noting this HR HEROES HANGOUT series and even our site SPONSOR SHOWCASE)! I spent an hour in the meeting discussing HR in general and their firm expertise specifically. They have US federal and multi-state postings, forms, compliance solutions (many in English and Spanish)! They also have select materials for Canadian firms. I look forward to partnering with them to provide you the most up-to-date and powerful tools to ensure that you are (and/ or continue to be) an HR HERO at your organization! I know that HR may appear to be an overwhelming field at the outset and is never a profession where you can rest on your past knowledge. There are a multitude of new laws, new court rulings and new business practices to learn and adjust to (but you are never bored in this field)! I encourage you to access their solutions through the links below and support them as they are supporting us. Thank you! |
