In this episode our topic is, "When Team Building Turns Into Team Destruction." In this show we discuss A Stone* of Solutions™ including: 1) You can't force teams to bond. 2) Why do you think that you need teams to bond? 3) Functional teams function. 4) Dysfunctional teams do not function. 5) Team Building is a REWARD for FUNCTIONAL TEAMS. 6) Read number 5 again. 7) Team Building transforms Performing Teams into High Performing Teams. Team Building does not positively impact teams that do not function (as they have no existing foundation to build upon). 8) Lack of leadership is the reason for dysfunction teams (of managers, supervisors, HR, executives, etc.). 9) Problems caused by leadership must be solved by addressing leadership (not team building). 10) First, address leadership problems to create an opportunity for a functional team. 11) Second, assess the team to determine if they are functional or dysfunctional. 12) Lastly, Functional Teams are REWARDED with Team Building (indoor, outdoor, on site, offsite, retreat, or of the type that most meets the existing functional team expectations of a REWARD). 13) Dysfunctional teams are not a team (due to not actually functioning). Placing upgraded flooring on a cracked foundation is useless. It is adding insult to injury for mandating Team Building with a dysfunctional team. 14) The most talented Team Building expert in the world (including myself) is not able to "fix" a dysfunctional team via Team Building. We are able to separately address the leadership causes and craft a strategy and execution process to resolve them. After the leadership foundation is laid, the team members are given time to confirm that they are a functioning team (assessment, confirmation, etc.). Then, and only then, Team Building is a REWARD for them. BONUS: Team Building only receives a "bad name" when it is misused and substituted as a PUNISHMENT for DYSFUNCTIONAL TEAMS. Build the foundation (leadership), let it cure and set for a while (team members bond organically as needed to be able to meet their collective work and individual needs). Then, once the solid and high performing foundation is in and succeeding for a sustained period of time, then select the upgraded high quality flooring to place on top of the successful foundation (this is the Team Building REWARD). In this show we explore how a wonderful and highly effective reward has been abused and misused as a punishment and insult to dysfunctional teams (haven't they suffered enough?). Use Team Building as it is intended! *A stone is unit of measure equaling 14 pounds (so we have 14 elements in our one stone of solutions!). Do You Want To Be A HR Hero?
